Per Electric Telegraph— Copyright. Per Press Association. NEW SOUTH WALES ASSEMBLY. Hydkey, May 31. In the Assembly, Sir H. Parkes made another strong appeal on behalf of Federation, contending that it would be
criminal to upset the tariff unless the new duties were meant to last. He reckoned that Federation would be absolutely hopeless for twenty-one years if Mr Reid's proposals were adopted. He would fight forfreetrade as the policy best suited to a federation, but if protection were adopted he would accept it. Mr Reid, m replying, said no colony m Australia would be found neglecting social legislation and reform for Federation alone, and only by tariff reform could they obtain direct taxation. The House has been sitting all night. The Legislative Assembly is still (11. 30 a.m.) sitting, no progress being made, as the Opposition are stonewalling. After a continuous sitting of twentyfive hours the financial debate concluded this afternoon, the Government carrying the formal resolution by 56 votes to 25. RELEASE OF CRIMINALS. F. Abigail, F. Waddy, J. P. Howe and J. Miller who were sentenced to five and seven years, of which they have served between three and four; and Andrew Fitzgerald, sentenced to five years for embezzlement as managing director of the Trades and Labour Co-operative Store, of which he has served threequarters, have all been released. W. P. Smail, who was sentenced m 1892 to five years' imprisonment on a charge of embezzling money belonging to one of the local banks, has been released from gaol. THE ARAWA. It has been ascertained that Captain Robertson, of the ship Aberfoyle, who was reported to have died mysteriously on May Ist, committed suicide by taking poison. The Aberfoyle was sighted by the steamer Tagliaferro off the coast on May 18th, and the latter's second officer was placed on board to navigate the ship to Melbourne. Melbourne. May 31. The ship Aberfoyle has arrived here safely. The crew report that but for the timely appearance of the steamer Tagliaferro, "the vessel would have been wrecked the same night as land was sighted. Captain Robertson had been drinking heavily before the mate was washed overboard, and after this event occurred he drank half apint of carbolic acid from the effects of which he died. THEATRICAL CARNIVAL. The theatrical carnival m aid of the dramatic and musical charities realised £1000. SENTENCED TO DEATH. Arthur Beck has been sentenced to death for the murder of Kate Norton m South Melbourne at the end of April. PEACEFUL POLITICS. The Address m Reply was adopted m both Houses. DEEP SINKING. A payable reef has been struck m Lansell's mine, Bendigo, at a depth of 3100 feet, ■which is the deepest payable discovery ever made m Australia. THE PACIFIC CABLE. Mr Kingston, Premier of South Aus? tralia, declines to co-operate with the other colonies m urging on the Pacific cable question. THE PERTHSHIRE'S CATTLE. Brisbane, May 31. In view of the effect likely to be produced on the London market, the Queensland Government intend to have a searching post moi'tein examination made into the cause of death of the Perthr shire's cattle.
