At a largely attended public meeting resolutions were carried demanding legislation for the abolition of sweating m the tailoring trade and denouncing the indiscriminate huddling together of large numbers of men, women and children m ill-venti-lated hovels where they worked long hours for starvation wages. Some of the speakers stated thai sweating was largely on the increase m the city. A deputation was appointed to wait on the Goveanment on the subject. (By Telegraph.) WELLINGTON, May 30. The Wellington Knights of Labour intend to submit the following resolutions to the District Assembly :— That the Government be asked to grant bush settlers their selections free of rent for the first three years ; and to reduce railway rates on perishable produce, irrespective of distance ; that the poll tax on Chinese be increased to £100. The Labour Department propose to immediately appeal against the decision of Mr Northeroft, S.M., at Auckland, m connection with the Shops and Shop Assistants Act. DUNEDIN, May 30. About 200, half of whom attended out of curiosity, assembled at the Labour Bureau this morning and were addressed by Messrs Hutchison, Earnshaw, Morrison, and the Mayor.
