A substantial increase m the Stock Tax will bo one of. the leading proposals of the new Government, and they are also likely to impose a duty on beer and tea. , The general elections will probably take place m April. THE VAN DIEMEN'S LAND BANK. Hobart, Jan. 15. At a meetiDg of the Commercial Bank the chairman defended that institution from an implication of having been concerned m a conspiracy to ruin the Bank of Van Piemen's Land. He aaid that if the Bank could have been saved they would have done so, but an inspaction of the-accounts prior to tb.B suspension disclosed revelations that had never m their wildest dreams been anticipated. There was no course but to advise the closing of the institution. This statement has caused a sensation, as it phces a tolally different aspect to that set forth by the management of the Bank of Van Diemen's Land. ' ' . • : (Received 7.40 p.m., Jan. loth.) THE WAKATIPU. Sydney, Jan. 15. Sailed— Wikatipu for Wellington. THE PFOTECTION OF TRAJDE. Mr Dibbs, the Premier, replying to an influential deputation, said that the time had come when- strong reprenentations akquld be made to the Imperial Government to confer equal rights for the protection of trado as is granted to foreigners m the New Hebrides and he would im'me"diately bring the matter before the Imperial Government. PROCEEDINGS ABANDONED. The proceedings to tost the legality o? imposing duties before the Customs Bill wag passed by Parliament have been abaodoned.
