BRAWLING IN A SYNAGOGUE.
» Herbert Freund, the man who ha; frequently been m trouble for brawling m St. Paul's Cathedral and for obstructing the 3treeta near to the Mansion House by preaching the "City's doom," was charged at Marlborough-street Police Court with disturbing the congregation of Jews assembled for worship m the synagogue, Great Portland-street. The prisoner entered the synagogue on a previous afternoon when the service for the Day oi Atonement was being performed by the Rev. Mr Fay. Taking hia stand near tn the door the prisoner Bhonted m a loud voice, " You Jews why don'you believe m the Messiah .' Wr,t c; d you all. Fire, fire, fire !" wh' jn h( blew a penny trnmper, and most of thi congregation, wondering what -was thi matter, left their seats. Many of then rushed to the exits, and for a minute o two something like a paDjc prevailed Mr Jonah Jonas,the wardea^gave Freun< into custody, and the excitement was thu: allayed. The clergyman aaid he did no hear the word "Fire I'^and Mr Bernarc Abrahams observed that it mieht hav< been mistaken for " Messiah." Thepennj trumpet was produced m court. Freunc then began to lau*h. He essayed some Scriptural quotations, but the magistrate told him to hold his tongue; and he ordered him to be remandod for a week for inquiries to be made about him, Freund objected to be so dealt with, and seemed disinclined to leave the dock, but the gaolers took bold of him, and he was quietly led to the eelK He, however, exclaimed ere he accompanied them, "] think the Jews ought to know the great Atonement is Our Saviour, and that He is the only means by which we can salvation. I did not cry out ' Fire !' "
