TIMAJHT— Monday, Juwb 25. (Before B. Woollcombe, Esq., E.M.) TBE3PAS3. Archibald Hacfic was charged with being unlawfully and illegally on Mr Wakefield's premises on the night- of the 23rd inst. Edward "Wakefield deposed that ho was m bed betiAen 10 and 11 o'clock on the night m question, when he was arouied by hearing quick footsteps passing through the verandah. He got up and searched everywhere without seeing any one until he went into the garden, where he found the prisoner concealed ; and on being interrogated, he was unable to give any satisfactory account of himself. He told the prisoner that he would give information to the police, and came into the house to pat his boots on, and on going out again, he saw the prisoner with another man going into Hamilton's boarding-house. The prisoner pleaded guilty, but said he had had too much drink, and went to Mr WakefieM's house by mistake. . He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. LAHCEHT. Michael Home was brought up on remand, charged with stealing six tins of preserved meats from the Meat Preserving Company's stores at the Washdyke. Sergeant Boutladge said, when he arrested the prisoner, he had the tins now produced m his possession, and that he stated he bought them from another man m exchange for fire sticks of tobacco. William Ba'four deposed : lam manager of the Meat Preserving Co. at the Washdyke. I can identify these tins as being the property of the company. The tins that are sold to storekeepers m Timaru and elsewhere are labelled before being sent away, while these tins have no appearance of any labels haying been on them. The tins are worth Is each. I don't know the prisoner. Charles Aitken deposed : lam a painter by trade and am employed at the Meat Company's premiie*. I raw the prisoner at the stores having a meal, which was supplied him gratis, about 12 days ago. Mr Balfour is (m the habit of giving tickets to swaggers, who are then supplied with a meal by the cook without payment. Henry Draper deposed: lam an upholsterer. The prisoner remained at my

pla?e for a fortnight previous to last Monday week. He left on that morning with his mate on his way for Temuka. The prisoner was convicte.i of the offence, and sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor. A s«cjnd charge, on which the prisoner had been remanded, was thrown out for want of evidence.
