Timaru Herald Office, Saturday Erening. Business generally since our last report has been fairly active, and a considerable quantity of land and lire stock has changed hands at satisfactory prices to all concerned. We have no failures of any importance to chronicle, and trade seemi to be somewhat brisker than for »ome time post. Grain stocks m the hands of merchant* are very heavy, and the etorei are filled to overflowing. Although a large amount of pro* duce ha^ been sent away by rea and rail during the month, it has accumu'ated through the difficulty experienced m obtaining vessels. The stocks awaiting shipment may be put down at over 100,000 bushels of wheat, and between 25,000 and 40,000 bushels of oat*. Amongst the principal items of export for the month, we may mention 61,090 bushels wheat ; 5240 do. barley ; 3988 do. out* ; 709 sacks potatoes ; 100 do. bran ; 80 do flour ; 249 bales wool ; 50 cases preserved meat, and about 100 casks of tallow. 6 rain prices have advanced considerably, prime milling wheat being now quoted up to 6s 3d ; and best oats 3s. Barley remains at a nominal rate. Messrs Taylorand Bowie report as follows : — Flour (wholesale)' is fetching from £16 10» per ton ; best oatmeal, £20; sharps, £8, f.o.b ; bran, £5 10s, f.o.b ; new potatoes) at the rate of £2 ss. In building material, Mr John Jackson quotes as follows: — Timber — N»-w Zealand totara and black pine, from 14s per 100 feet; white pine, 12s per 100 feet ; do Van Die* man's Land, 20s per 100 feet ; V.D.L. paling a (sft), 225; do (6ft) 265; V.D.L. shingles, 27s 6d per 1000; spokes, 42s per 100; felloe., Is 9d each ; Gospel Oak galvanised iron, £35 per ton : bricks, £3 10s per thousand. All kinds of building material and blue gum timber an m good supply. Coals are £2 15s per ton m the yard. Firewood is at £2 per cord. Firewood (cut), 40, b.p. Mr Moss Jonas reports business m all kinds of stock for four weeks, ending to day, to have been fairly brisk, and although transactions hare not been so extensive a* the previous month, still compared with the corresponding period last year, prices hare ruled a ittle higher, and more remunerative to breeders, this will apply especially to draught stock. Cattle. — Fat cattle hare not been m excess of the demand, fair rates being well maintained. My transactions show from £10 to £13 10s, or equal to 30s per 1001 b. for prime, and from 25s to 28s per lOOlbs. for for inferior. MDch cows hare been very saleable, and still continue to draw full prices, my transactions m this class both m town and country sales showing from £12 to £16 10s for well-bred animals m full profit, and springing, and £7 to £10 for ordinary.
