A public meeting was held on Thursday, the Bth instant, m the Assembly Room of the Crown Hotel, Arowhenua, for the formation of the above Troop. 1 Dr. Rayner was voted to the chair. The Chairman stated that at a previous meeting called for the purpose of forming a Yeomanry Cavalry Corps m this, the Ueraldme district, he (the Chairman) was requested to put himself m communication with Major White the Commanding Officer of the Volunteers m this Province, for the purpose of obtaining the information requisite m forming a Corp3, the result was the attendance of the gentleman on his right, Major White, who kindly attended on this occasion to auswer any questions and give such information as would enable them to carry out the object m view. He begged to introduce Major White. Major White, upon rising, was received with I loud cheers, said he attended at the request of the Chairman, he felt the greatest pleasure m being present, and he was sure that if a corps was formed m this district, from what he had seen of the young men here, it would not be equalled by any corps m the Colony. He would impress upon them the nature of the oath they would have to take, and not to play at soldiers, but enter into it with heart and spirit, determined to make themselves efficient volunteers and be a credit to the district corps. He should be happy to answer any questions.

Mes3rs. Dyson, Thompson, Megson, and Nelson having severally asked questions, to which the Major replied, a vote of thanks was given to that gentleman for his attendance, and to the Doctor for presiding at the mectiug. Three cheers were then proposed by Major White and given enthusiastically for the Geraldine Troop of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. A similar compliment having been paid to Major White, the meeting separated.

More than thirty names were signed to the petition for the enrolment of the corpa.
