" The following is Mr-Jos. Mackay's letter to the Anglo-Continental Gold Mining Syndicate, and a cablegram to the same effect has been transmitted to London ', also a communication to tho London " Mining Journal" on the the same subject:— Paeroa, Auckland, let June, 1896. The Secretary Anglo-CtontiuoulalColdMiwngSwidicatc, 22, Austin Friars, ; Loudon, England. Sir,—l havo been given to understand that your Association is dealing with the Kauri Timber Company for tho acquisition of certain freeholds which thoy hold, within tho proclaimed Hauraki Gold Mining District. I now beg to inform you that tho Crown acquired the right to mino for gold over those lands from tho Native owners, long prior to tho formation of "Tho Kami Timber Company." . Tho first Agreement was made by tho la to Sir Donald McLean, on tho 2nd November, 1861, it included within it tho Kennedy Bay, Whaugapoua, Matamataharakohe, Mercury, and Cabbago Bay blocks. t Tho second Agreoracnt was made by mo with tho Ngatitamatcra tribo on tho 9th November, 1867. Tho southern boundary differed from that in tho Agrcemcut of November, 1861, and included a larger area than it.
Tho third waa mado by mo with tho Ngatiwhanaunga and Ngatiraaru tribes, on tho 13th December, 1867- It included moro than doublo tho area of that comprised iu tho Agreement of November, 1807, Tairna is hi this. ' ,
As the miners are determined to test tho title of tho Ifauii Timber Company to tho minerals sf thoir freeholds, it might bo found advisablo to await tho result of tho action just being commencod in tho Supremo Court, before investing your capital in what may turn out to bo fruitless in profitable results to yourselves.—l-am, Your obedient servant, James Mackay.
