Sir,—l havo been given to understand that your Association is dealing with the Kauri Timber Company for tho acquisition of certain freeholds which thoy hold, within tho proclaimed Hauraki Gold Mining District. I now beg to inform you that tho Crown acquired the right to mino for gold over those lands from tho Native owners, long prior to tho formation of "Tho Kami Timber Company." . Tho first Agreement was made by tho la to Sir Donald McLean, on tho 2nd November, 1861, it included within it tho Kennedy Bay, Whaugapoua, Matamataharakohe, Mercury, and Cabbago Bay blocks. t Tho second Agreoracnt was made by mo with tho Ngatitamatcra tribo on tho 9th November, 1867. Tho southern boundary differed from that in tho Agrcemcut of November, 1861, and included a larger area than it.
