MEETING OF WATER SUPPLY COMMITTEE.

The first meeting of the newly-appointed Committee was held last evening in the Borough Chambers. Present — The Mayor (in tho chair), Messrs Wilkinson, Bawden, Speight, and Osborne.

The Secretary (Mr Dean) reported that no communication bad been received from the County Council respecting tho appointmeut of representatives on the new committee. A letter was read from the Parawai Highway Board stating that Mr Vernon had been appointed tho Board's repreaentative.—.Tiie notice was informal, and it was decided to inform the Board to that effect.

Eedbotions.—Mr Tickery, blacksmith, Pollon-otreet, wrote requesting the committee to reduce the amount paid by him for water to blow a bellows, as tho pressure was not sufficient for the purpose.— It was agreed to chargo Mr Victory at the same rate as a private house. Mr Pyne, butcher, asked for a reduction of the sum charged for water to drive his sausage machine, as ho considered it far too high.—The Committee could not see its way clear to'grant the application. Leakage.—Mr Speight reported that ono of tho mains in Upper Sealey-street had burst, and was leaking badly .-The Turncock was instructed to see to tho matter at once.

Watbe for Blook 27.-A letter was read from the County Clerk staling that the' Council were willing to allow a connection to be made with the, big race passing above Block 27, in order to supply the residents with water,—A report on tho subject was read from the Turncock. He estimated that to lay down suitablo pipes to the houses of the persons who had petitioned the Committee, and make connections, would involve an expenditure of £300, whilst the revenue would only be about £20 a year.—After considerablo discussion, it'was decided to go on with the undertaking as soon as sufficient inducement is guaranteed.

Appication for Wateb.-Mi 1 A.Cullen wrote asking the Committee to lay on the water to his premises at the corner of Mary and Pollen-streets.-A greed to.

Disputed AccooNT.-Mr Thomas A> nold, agent for the water supplied to the shipping, was instructed to charge the customary amount for water supplied to the Auckland and North Shore Ferry Company's steamers at the Orahamstown Wharf, the account being disputed. QrjEEN ■ STREET.—Mr ' MoGoWAN appeared as a_ deputation from a number of residents in Queen-street north, asking that their houses might be connected with the Supply. He very generously offered to provide funds to lay down the pipes, the money so expended to be refunded when the committee are iu funds, —Keferred to the Works Committee with power to act.

Waiotahi. -Mr McGowan also brought under the notice of the Committee the necessity that existed for a supply of water to the residents of the lower part of the "Waiotahi Hill, and,on the motion of Mr Wilkinson it was decided that the Turncook should make enquiries into the cost of the work, and to report to the next meeting with a view of affording relief, . The' Wine-inch Mains.-A discussion aa to the best means of providing funds to lay the 9-inch mains in Shortland then took place. It was stated that some assistance oould be obtained outside the contributions of residents, but it was thought the amount available would be insufficient to pay off Mr McCaul's claim ou -the pipes, and to lay them down, The matter was deferred for further enquiry and report.
