She brings a number of cabin passengers. _ The Wharf Committee of the Corporation had a long and animated discussion this afternoon as to the acceptance of a tender for tho construction of increased wharf accommodation, Sinco tho last meeting, tho contractors for No. 1 and Ho. 2 contracts had'come to an understanding with each other, aud notified to tho committed that thoy were willing to

co-operate, and put- in as one tender. This was opposed by several Councillors as being unfair to 'the other contractors, who tendered under the impression that tho lowest tender in the' aggregate for No. 1 and No. 2 would be accepted, and they maintained.that tho communication of Coffee and Goodfellow should not be entertained. , ■ On the other hand, the, majority of the Council were of opinion that the Council should, save £5(14 if it could, and accept the conjoined tenders of Coffee and Greenfield;'. if ■ tliey wero satisfied as to th&ir ability to do the work and their sureties, It was moved that- McKirdy's tender (lowest in aggregate of any one tender) be accepted, but ultimately the committee broke up without any decision being come to. A special meeting of the Council is to be called, aud formal notice given for the rescinding of the resolution passed at the last meeting, which prevents the Corporation accepting divided tenders, unless they could save £1,000. All the tenders read by post this afternoon were too high. ■ The Telegraph Department has to-day received intimation that the Sydney Government will co-operate with the Cable Company arid tho New Zealand Government in opening the offices at 1.30 a.m., New Zealand 'time, for the distribution of English telegrams. ; A meeting of the Municipal Council was held last night to consider tenders for earthworks, &c., pipe supply, and pipe laying. The first was divided into four. contracts, 1 for. which seven tenders were received, tho total cost ranging from £55,350 to £46,174, For pipe supply nine tenders, ranging from £24,646 to £18,310. For pipe laying six tenders, ranging from £2,762 to £1,938. Tender accepted for construction of works, exclusive of pipes and pipe laying, John Henderson, of Wellington — amount, ,£42,415. . " ' Dunedin, Tuesday. _ An inquest'has been held at the Lunatic Asylum. ■ concerning the death of John Bowers. Deceased was received at the Dunedin Hospital a few days ago. After undergoing treatment there, for four days, he was, on the certificates of Drs Burns and Cough trey, sent to the; asylum as a 1 lunatic. It was very; cold, on the day he 'was removed. Tlie conveyance used was an open'express, and, according to the .'evidence of Professor MacGregor, when Bowers arrived at the asylum-he was in a dying state from typhoid fever, and died . after 'lingering a couple;of; days'..; Much interest: was taken in the case'by medical men, seven being present at the ipquest.
