SHOOTING NOTES.

(By “Scout.”) ’

The first match of the New Plymouth Defence Rifle Club’s championship series was fired on Thursday and Saturday afternoons. The Thursday competitors had the worst of the deal as tar as weather conditions were concerned—the light was variable and the wind a pronounced ‘'fish tail,” and a score of 91 under the circumstances was remarkably good. On Saturday the conditions were almost ideal.

There are one or two members still 1 to fire and they will do so on a date to be fixed by the committee. The second competition (ranges 500 and 600 yards) will be completed, if possible, this afternoon and the third at 600 and 800 yards will bo taken on Thursday and Saturday, also if possible. The reason for this apparent urgency is the necessity of having three scores to form a basis for the automatic system of handicapping in the Thursday and Saturday Cup series, which are handicaps. The committee of tho Taranaki Rifle ' Association will meet early this week j to consider tho draft programme and j the suggestions made with regard to it ■by ipombers. The meeting will be held ' in February and there is every promise ; of it being a very successful one. j ■ Tho Taranaki Group Meeting will be 1 held at Hawora on a date to be fixed, i but it will not bo later than December 15. A match for the Rifle Clubs’ ChalI lenge Shield will be fired this week beI tween the Hawora Rifle Club (the holdI ors) and the Tahora Club (challengers). The match will take place at Hawera and the winners will then have to compote with tho Pntoa Club on a date to be fixed. Tho locality where this match will be fired depends on tho result of tho match between Tahora and Hawora ; strictly entro nous, I think it will bo Hawora.
