ARCHBISHOP MANNIX.
POPE SORELY PERPLEXED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. LONDON, August 18. The Rome correspondent of the Daily Chronicle reports that the Vatican is deluged with telegrams from the Catholic hierarchy throughout the world urging the Pope to make a formal protest against Archbishop Manhix’s treatment. A correspondent learned that the Pope is sorely perplexed how to act for the best. Probably Archbishop Mannix will he requested to journey to Rome for a personal conference with the Pope.—Aus.-N.Z. The Central Nows states tnat the Government learns that the consistorial congregation at Romo addressed to Archbishop Mannix a strong exhortation to maintain the greatest possible moderation on political questions. Interviewed by the Australian Press Association, Archbishop Mannix said that there was no truth in the report that he had received an exhortation from Rome.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
