The telegram from Wanganui reporting the Chief Justice’s romarka in sentencing] Mackay made him say it was an impulsive act, and he is so reported in one of the Wanganui papers, but not in the other. His Honour wishes To say that what he really said was that it was not an impulsive act, basing his opinion on tho fact that Mackay placed a pistol in CresswclTs hand after ho shot him. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. 1 AUCKLAND, June 9. Tho attempted murder of a Maori seaman, named Jack Murphy, at Dargavillo, on February 22, was alleged against two brothers, Walter Ross and Sydney Boss, in.-tho Supreme Court today. _ There wore alternative charges of having done bodily harm to Mnrlipv, ar d of having caused such bodily harm to him that had ho died as the result they would have been guilty of manslaughter. It was alleged that Murphy was attacked by accused and thrown from the wharf into tho harbour. r lhe jury found accused not guilty of attempted murder, but guilty on "the second and third counts. Both the accused were sent to gaol for two years with hard labour.
