TARANAKI’S EARLY HISTORY. (From the Herald of December, 1869.) Saturday, December 11.—-Some little interruption of road work on the north sklo of Opunako has.been caused by Native objections on the ground that it was only a preliminary to the Pa I:eh a seizing the laud. On Monday three of them seized the theodito belonging to Mr. Smith, thosurveyor in the work and carried it away. William King, of IJmuroa, recovered the instrument and work was proceeded with. Tho polling for tho election of a member of the Provincial Council for the Grey and Bell district took place on Wednesday when Mr. Upjohn was elected by 42 votes to Mr. Hill’s 41. The Taranaki Cavalry Volunteer Corps was paraded for inspection by Colonel Harrington on Wednesday, and tho inspection of the Militia living within a radius of three nliles from the town took place on Thursday. The exports this week consist of 19101 b. butter. 30 dozen eggs, 38 hides, and 5 bales of sbepp skins.
