NOTES FROM LONDON.
GERMANY MUST PAY. THE WHOLE COST OF THE WAR. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received Deo. 11, 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 10. Sir Eric Geddes, First Lord of the Admiralty, in a speech at Cambridge, expressed the opinion that Germany should refund the full cost of the war together with all damage by land and sea. It was inconceivable that the supremacy of the British Navy would ever be surrendered and also inconceivable that the Kaiser, the murderer of Captain Fryatt, and others should go unpunished.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn, and Reuter. ME. LLOYD GEORGE. SAYS WARS MUST BE PREVENTED LONDON, Dec. 9. Mr. Lloyd George, speaking at the Queen’s Hall, emphasised that peace must be a just peace. War must be made more difficult, if not impossible. Hence he was an ardent believer in a league of nations. Those who provoked war must pay the penalty. The more exalted ones were most responsible. Democracy must so fashion its judgment that kings, emperors, crown princes and such like will know in future that if they bring upon earth wretchedness of this kind-Hue penalty will inevitably fall on their own heads. The Peace Conference must abolish the gigantic conscript armies which have been the means of tempting rulers to make war.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
STRIKE OF COTTON WORKERS. LONDON, Dec. 9. The cotton strike is in full operation. A hundred thousand spinners and fifty million spindles are idle. As stocks of yam are low the weaving sheds must soon close, rendering idle an additional two hundred thousand. Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. BRITISH TRADE FIGURES. LONDON, Dec. 9. The Board of Trade returns show that imports for November increased by £7.115,863, and exports decreased by £163,456, while re-exports decreased by £831,330. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn, and Reuter. ABOLITION OP CONSCRIPTION. LONDON, Dec. 9. If the Coalition Government is returned to power it will go to the Peace Conference with the definite intention of proposing the abolition of conscription in Europe.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn, and Reuter.
