NEW SERVICE FROM THE PACIFIC COAST.

Further evidence of the glowing prospects of the trade between the Pacific Coast and Australia is afforded by the nows received a fortnight ago to the effect that still another new steamship service is to bo established (says a Sydney exchange). Tho new’ lino will have its headquarters in Portland (Oregon), under tho guidance of Mr. H. M. Williams, a well-known American shipping magnate, who has his plans thoroughly matured and proposes to operate at first with two vessels he has secured from Norwegians, and, when circumstances demand it. to obtain more tonnage. Tho route the vessels will follow will be from Portland to Australia, thence San Framisco, and back to Portland. The tonnage to be first employed will bo- purely cargo-carriers of high speed and big lifting capacity. INTERNMENT QUITE* A COSTLY AFFAIR. Quite a sensation was caused in Now York the other day (says an English shipping journal) when word was passed round that a number of tho big German liners tied up in the harbour were about to make a dash for the open. People coming from South Brooklyn declared that they had seen several HamburgAmcrican steamships moving from their berths, and confirmation of tho story came from no less a personage than tho marine superintendent of Herr Baffin's Company. Ho added, however, that all that had been done was to turn the liners round, as after spending nearly twelve months alongside tho piers the metal in tho latter had badly deflected the compasses, and it was therefore decided to turn the vessels round in order to readjust them to some extent. The enforced idleness of the great proportion of the German mercantile marine must be costing a pretty penny in depreciation.
