A SUBMARINE DUEL.

ITALIAN v. AUSTiHAN., The Stampa publishes a. graphic account of how tile Austrian submarine Ul2 was torpedoed and sunk by an Italian submarine in the Adriatic. An Italian torpedo-boat cruising some distance from the Italian submarine observed an enemy submarine, approaching at high speed. The commander decided not to give chase, buj. manoeuvred in order to a.pproacn the Italian submarine, while pretending not to .have noticed the enemy. When the two submarines were face to face the enemy tired a torpedo, which missed. Then took place an epic struggle The two submarines fought for an hour and a half trying to torpedo eflc'n other, occasionally finding them, selves almost in collision. Each submarine adopted tactics to avoid getting broadside on to the other's torpedo-tubes, for it was a question of life or death. In the meantime tho Italian torpedo-boat hovered near, ready to firo on and sink the Austrian submarine should she appear on the surface.

Finally,, after a rapid manoeuvre, magnificently executed, tho Italian submarine secured tho coveted position. The Austrian vessel discharged two more torpedoes blindly in a last despairing effort. They passed harmlessly by. and the next moment an Italian torpedo struck the enemy full amidships, and she sank so rapidly that it .was impossible to save a single man.
