Mr. P. S.Whitcorahe received a cable last night saying that his son Percy, who is in hospital at Malta, is progressing favourably. Mr. A. M'Gonagle. of New Plymouth, received advice on Monday that his son Cyril (Wellington Infantry Battalion) "has returned to the front.

A Washington cablegram states that the marriage of President Wilson, which will be private, has been fixed for the end of December. Mr, G. T. Murray, resident engineer of the Public Works Department for the Stratford district, has been transferred to Wellington, to succeed Mr. Vickerrannn, who has been accepted for the front. His successor at Stratford has not yet been announced. A Sydney cable announces the death of G. R. Hazlitt, the international cricketer. He was a member of the last (1912) Australian team in England, when he and Whitty were the sound bowlers of the team. He was a son of Mr. J. W. Hazlitt, so well known in connection with the J. C. Williamson productions. Major Geoffrey Samuel Smith, to whom the D.S.O. has been awarded, left New Zealand with the Main Force, with the rank of captain and as second in command of the -South Otago Company of the Otago Battalion. Ho was on the retired list when the war broke out. Major Smith was reported severely wounded' on May 12, and was sent to England, but is since stated to have mado a good recovery. Major William M‘Gregor Turnbull, of tho New Zealand Staff Corps, upon whom the distinction of D.S.O. has been conferred, wont fo the front in command of tho South Otago Company of the Otago Battalion. Tie was one of the young New Zealand officers who wore*" sent to England for special training. and on Iris return ho was given the rank of captain and put in charge of No. 15 Group, with headquarters at Oamaru.
