AN ARCHBISHOP’S ADDRESS. SYDNEY, Sent. 7. Archbishop Wright, in his annual presidential address to the Anglican Synod, said: “Wo now recognise the tremendous issues at stake in this war, and must take on the grim truth that we shall be worsted unless wo fling aside everything that is usual and concentrate our entire Empire—money, men, machines, thought, and our fiscal, scientific, intellectual, and spiritual resources alike—to the supreme end of crushing the fees that are threatening to extinguish all our holiest aspirations.” He denounced raising war funds by gambling methods, ana the wild craze for luxury. FEDERAL WAR LOAN. MELBOURNE, Sept. 7. The Federal war loan is quoted in the open market at 10s per cent, premium for stock, and 12s 6d for Treasury bonds. ALLEGED FAILURE OF RED CROSS. GREAT INDIGNATION AROUSED. (Received Sept. 8, 9.25 aun.) SYDNEY, Sept. 8. Great indignation has been expressed at Colonel Springthorpo’s allegations as to the inefficiency of the Australian lied Cross. The papers publish denials of several of the allegations made, at the same time admitting that the basis of the charges is unfortunately true. Owing to the sudden rush of wounded the organisation was insufficient to cope with the needs. Tire chairman of the New South Wales Division of the Red Cross Society publishes a letter from Sir Frederick Treves to the medical officer at Heliopolis:—“You and your staff have done wonders. I am impressed at the energy, enthusiasm and thoroughness manifest in every department of the vast hospital.” The chairman points out that Colonel Springthorpe’s allegations were prior to the arrival of the commissioners, who were sent on July 14. The Defence Department is carrying out a confidential inquiry into the whole matter.
