BELIEF FOR THE WOUNDED. TRENTHAM v. WELLINGTON. ‘■Thousands of gallant New Zealanders have taken up arms on _ liehall of their King and Empire. They are doing their full duty to their country and to ns. 11 remains for us, therefore, to do our lull duty to them and their dependents. Now is the time to make the necessary provision, and I am confident that the cili•/.eas of the Dominion will consider it a privilege to see that every possible help .and assistance may lie provided to alleviate distress as the result of the response to the Empire’s call.”
The message is tho Prime .Minister's (says the Dominion) and the occasion for" which it was sent was Saturday’s Hngbv match in aid of New Zealand wounded soldiers and their dependents. ’The match was played on Athletic Park, and was well supported by the public, the attendance numbering about ;«)0 people. The teams which provided the auractio’n were a Wellington representative team and a team drawn from Trcntbnni camp. The Trciitbam fifteen included several New Zealand representatives, and most of tho remainder were provincial representatives. The team was of at least Island strength (on paper). It was the apparent strength of.the camp team which drew the crowd. Among those present were the Prime Minister (the Right lion. W. F. Massey) and the Mayor (Mr. d. P. lathe.).
The Trentham loam was composed of the following players:—Full-back. H. Adams (.Wellington representative); three-quarters, F. Wilson (Auckland and New Zealand University representative), G. Murray (Wellington and Auckland representative), J. K. Ellis (of South Auckland); live-eighths, S. Cameron (Taranaki representative) and E. Huberts (New Zealand, North Island, and Wellington representative); hullhack', A, Hoss (Auckland representative) ; wing-forward, A. Taylor (Now Zealand ami Taranaki representative); pack, C. Brown (New Zealand amUTaranaki representative). W. Anderson (of South Canterbury), \V. H. Harvey (of New Plymouth). J. French (Auckland and Maori representative); S. Paul (Taranaki representative), 11. M'Nab (of Auckland). The Wellington team was: Full-hack, H. Premlcviile (i.kmeke); three-quarters, W. MacEwaii (Petone), S. Bolton (Pctone), E. The mo tell produced very little play of high merit. On the points scored, Trenrbnm won easily—by 17 to nil—hut Wellington were unlucj v in ;:ot registering. a fairly large seen', and in reality tlio content was rather close. Tbe TrcnHiam men scored only three points in the first spoil, and this aider several narrow escapes of having their lino crossed.. Tho first of those- escapes was when Algar was thrown out at the corner dag, and another was when .E. Roberts just heat Algar in a race for the oval, and saved by forcing. Trenthnm’s three points wore obtained from a goal by Roberts. Early in the second spell the heavy vanguard of tho camp team asserted itself, and Downing, Taylor. and French led irresistible attacks on,the foe. French (alias “Hu* General”) was the first to score. A little later S. Cameron dashed across, and Murray converted this iry. Trentham, 11; Wellington, nil. The gentlemen in khaki renewed the pressure vigorously, and above Hie din of applausn a voice from tin* Maml could lie hoard ; “Come on you beauties. It’s a shame whai you’ll do to the Turks.” Wellington revived a while, and Gilciueu look play to Trentham line. His pass to Wilson went- astray, and the ball drifted out among the hacks. Prei.deville snapped it up and shot at the goal, but missed. Led by Moft’ntt, Wilson, and Francis. Wellington went right through tho camp learn, but again they tailed to score.
