The net ■proceeds of the gathering are to he given to the lielgian Relief Imiiul. 1 note your Oakum correspondent’s remarks re “the lady,", the •'lame horse." and the “niliciou.s inspector." tour correspondent's■ "lady friend" is not the only person who these inspectors try to fasten on, as a case somewhat similar happened to two ladies from this district some time back. As yemr correspondent points out. civility is cheap, but cheap as it is mifortimalelv it is not practiced hy all.

Great efforts are being made by the lanu'.s of tin- Tikoniugi nml Wailii districts to raise funds for tbc Belgian Bciior. I heir stall at the Patriotic Carnival now taking place at Waitara is very good, ami so brisk is the business being done that at the close of the first day many articles are already cleared. Hie settlers of the two districts will augment tbo fund still further next Monday, when, at hi.s Urcani yards, .Mr. Newton King will offer for sale all manner of stock, the gifts of the settlers.

'1 lie meeting of householders on Monday evening was poorly attended, and the following were elected: Messrs, J. H. Allen (chairman), 11. Foreman, C. horeman. Vickery and Fanil. Tbc reducing of the number of committeemen from seven to .five led to some discussion as to which of those seven had the best reason to retire. Each one appeared to think that he should be allowed to give up, and ns no arrangement could be agreed on, tho names of all those seven good men and true were placed in a hat. and lots were drawn, with the result ns stated. lam afraid the scats of the newly-elected five could be bought ior a mere song, as members hero do not seem to value the '‘honour” too highly. With their piims insignis tree hors do combat, goodness only knows what tho committee will now find to discuss. Let’s wait and see.

The mysterious disappearance of a new sot of gig harness one evening a few weeks ago has not yet been solved. This theft recalls similar thefts which occurred here a year or two ago, and in which tho culprit was never found out. ft is hoped that this latest "break” will he more successful for the general public: The death of Captain Armstrong is greatly regretted here. Although the late Captain -hud reached a good ago and had lived a useful and honourable litc. at the same time it is the loss of such men that makes the country poorer m many _ ways. ' Possessing not an enemy, with his principles and hand untarnished the Captain has gone to Ids rest. Would it that the present generation were only of the same stuff as many-of the old settlers now gradually passing away.
