BIG GUMS DROP SHELLS IN DUNKIRK.
GERMANS LANDING TROOPS AT LIBAtI. At the time of writing there is no fresh news from the Dardanelles. The High Commissioner states that the Hew Zealand casualtj list lias hot been received, but that the Australians had 17. casualties. This probably refers to the list of Australian officers u hich appears to-day. The people of Dunkirk had a surprise when a shower of shells dropped on their town and, knowing that the oernians -nere at least 18 miles away at Hieuport, decided that a warship must be bombarding the town. It turns out, however, that the Germans have some loin, guns at Nieuport and had amused themselves by trying their range. British airmen have in return dropped bombs, which it is hoped have put the guns out pf action. The new campaign 'of the German Ambassador in the United States, with the object of proving to Americans that it is not safe for them to ciocs the Atlantic owing to the presence of German submarines, is particularly inept if the desire is to make Germany more popular in the Cnited Slates. In Belgium there is no change in the position. The Germans are landing a force at Libau in the-Russian -,-uo proiinces. This can only be with the object of diverting Russian forces in that direction. As the Germans have not an unlimited supply of men it seems to the armchair critic unwise of them to extend their lines.
