The anniversary tea in connection with the Whiteley Sunday School takes place in the Whiteley Hall this evening at 6 o’clock, and will bo followed by tho usual meeting and distribution of prizes in the church. A Gisborne telegram reports that when the Gisborne-Mororc coach was descending the Kopua Hill tho polo broke and tho coach capsized. A passenger named Miss lloff had an arm broken, but the others on tho coach were not seriously injured. After having spout six years excavating among tho ancient ruins of Egypt and Palestine, Professor Hcisner, of Harvard University, recently returned to America. Tho profeasor carried out extensive excavations among tho Pyramids, and was rewarded with tho discovery of nine almost perfect samples of statuary of the fourth dynasty. Among tho specimens is a statue Of King Mycerinus, in whoso reign tho third Pyramid was built. Perhaps the most important discovery was that of some Hebrew writings contemporaneous with tho ora of Abac, about 870 B.C. The Mayor of Wanganui, Mr. C. E. Mackay, is appealing for assistance for Mr. Neville Thornton, who is almost paralysed and practically destitute. There are many in New Plymouth who knew Mr. Thornton well years ago, and perhaps some of them may be inclined to give him a little assistance in his time of need. Ho served his country in the Crimea and elsewhere, but was lietter known locally through his connection with the theatrical profession. His daughters wore clever actresses, and ho himself painted a set of scenery for tho Theatre Royal some years ago, Mr. Mackay is trying to raise sufficient funds to send him to Rotorua for a course of treatment there, and to furnish him with some of the comforts necessary to one of his years and infirmities.
