Tho Aberdeen Lino inaugurated tlie pioneer service between Australia and England, via South Africa, and one of the greatest events in its history is the advent of the steamer Themistocles. This vessel was recently launched at the yards of Messrs. Harland and Wollf, and left London on February 10 on her maiden voyage to Australia. She is a twin-screw steamer of 11,400 tons, is 516 feet over all in length, and 62 foot in beam, and has been constructed under Lloyd's survey for the 100 A 1 class, conforming also to the Admiralty Transport Department and Hoard of Trade passenger regulations and requirements. She is fitted with wireless telegraphy and submarine signalling apparatus, ami has accommodation for 100 firstclass and nearly 800 third-class passengers. The demand nowadays for singleberth state-rooms is a marked feature of ocean travel, and the Themistocles enjoys the distinction of possessing the largest proportion of cabins of this type of any ocean-going steamer, one complete, deck being allotted to them. The third-class quart ere also attain a high degree of excellence. The ThemistoeW* is timed to leave Sydney on April 22. being due in England in a mole time for the Coronation, and a large number of passages has already been secured. Captain A. If. H. C. Douglas, 11.N.11., who is well known in .Australasian waters, has been appointed to tho Themistocles. The Demosthenes, winch is ft sister-shin of the Thernistoeles, is now' nearing completion nt Messrs. Harland and Wolffs, and they are exactly similar, with one exception. While the Themistocles has twin-screws, the Demosthenes is propelled by a combination of reciprocating and turbine machinery, as in the ca t e of tin* leviathan White Star liner Olympic. Tho Demosthenes will he the first .'■framer engaged in the Home trade fitted in this manner.
