WEST COAST LEASES
A CHANGE WANTED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 26. Aboht 100 Natives interested in W’est Coast Native leases arc at present in "Wellington on business connected with their lands. Many leases granted in 1881 will shortly be falling in, and Pakeha leaseholders are urging amendment in the law which will bring the lands Under the operation of the Act of 1892. This Act gives tho tenant perpetual right of renewal with revaluation every 21 years. The Act of 1881 provides that at the end of 21 years, leases (which are at present administered by the Public Trustee) shall be put up to auction, and disposed of to the highest bidder, the improvements of the outgoing tenant being limited to £45 per aero. Tho Natives, who had art informal gathering with Mr. Carroll to-day, arc anxious to have the position adjusted ia such a way that they will be given Some hope of securing the working of at least some of tlioir land and that they will “not bo kept out of possession for ever.”
