FATAL FIRE AT WINTON.
MTNERNEY’S REMAINS FOUND. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Feb. >lO. Further particulars of the AY in ton fire show that M'Xnernoy, the man in charge, was burned to death. Ho was a man of 38, brother-in-law of Mr. Keith, the proprietor, and was . employed as barman. At the time he was in solo charge of the hotel, Mr.and Mrs. Keith having started the previous day on a motor trip to Dunedin. The* incinerated remains of deceased wore recovered at midday, there Being evidence that he had been endeavouring to save the cashbox and books, the remains of which were, found alongside the body. Fortunately there were not many boarders in the house at the time. Those who, were there found groat difficulty in escaping. Pierce’s hairdressing saloon, alongside the hotel, was also destroyed, but Coombo’s livery stables a,t thp rear were ■ saved, though the side and"top ignited. The Bank of New Zealand was in imminent danger, the projecting eves taking fire frequently, but thc-promptness of a bucket brigade saved the building. The insurances on tho hotel were: £7OO on the building, £525 on the furniture, and £IOO on the stock in the New Zealand, Yorkshire, and North British offices. Pierce’s insurance amounted to £?00 in the Standard, office. The stalN were insured for £223 in tho South Britis hand New Zealand. The South British and New Zealand. Tho supposed that «the fire started in tho kitchen,:where tho hotel porter at about 5.30 had lit up'the stove before leaving for Keith’s farm. .
