LAWN TENNIS.

(By "Volley.")

English critics have made. H. A. Parker the draw of the season. They kept up a continual comment on his j play and gave him extensive notices. Both Parker and Quill competed at the All Entr'nii'l Championships and are now playing at smaller meetings. The experience that these New Zfalanders gain at Home should be most beneficial and they should compete at the Now Zealand meeting at Auckland an improved pair. With a fine w«ek local players have patronised the Vivian Street Court fairly often, but as yet I have heard of no new developments in the proposed tourtMnneftt, , , An English journal states: "The Lawn Tennis Association probably wishes that the Davis Cup had never been soldered. By the etiquette of sport, the preliminary tie should be Clayed in Australia, who expect Engind to go after the cup. But the Lawn Tennis Association cannot raise a representative team to make the long trip'to the Antipodes, and it is very doubtful if they can raiso a team which would stand mnch of .a. chance with America. However, they have decided to try a brush, with America first, m Philadelphia This is merely the easiest way out of a difficult situation. The association complains that it has no money to pay the expenses of an American visiting team." Further on in the same article the paper terms it "absurd to think that tw< .porters of lawn tennis, in this country (England) oould not have raised the necessary guarantee fund. The treasurer of the association states that he was n&fc consulted. Not a single note of appeal was raised in the official journals' , . .The president of the association, so far as I am aware, was not approached. The Lawn Tennis Association has exposed the weakness of its resources to the other countries concerned." ' ' The Lawn Tennjs Association of England has added the folloVing recommendation to the regulations for tlie management of lawn tennis prise meetings,:—"An umpire (or line umpire) should call a 'fault In every case where ho is not satisfied that the service laws have been strictly observed." . Tho Australasian championships are to be held on the Western Australia Association's urass courts, Perth, starting on October 16, and continuing to the 29th. Five championships are on the programme—men's singles and -doubles. -ladies' singles and doubles, and the combined doubles. The three latter event* are new to Australasian championships. ' There are ten handicap events, including a veterans' singles, a boys' singles, and a girls' singles. The first is open te players forty years of age and over, and the two latter for players eighteen years of age snd under. Entries for all events ctes« on Tuesday.' October 12, with the secretary, Mr. S. V. Eaton, P.O. Box 88, 0.P.0., Western Australia. In the inter-State tennis tourney Queensland defeated New South Wales by 15* rubbers to 6. The New Zealand lawn tennis championship tournament will be held at the Eden and Epsom Club's courts, commencing on Boxing Day. Six courts will be used.
