OPUNAKE.

i (From Our Own Correspondent ) June 10. — As predicted, the Tennis Club's plain and fancy dross masquerade ball was a groat success. A large number of dancers wore fancy costume, and the different and many-coloured chesses gave the ballroom quite a bril- [ hant appearance. Prizes were given ' for the best dresses. Mrs. Bishop, as "The Opunake Times," and Mr. Coombridge, as "Tho Owl," were the winners. The ball was also a success financially and the club is to be congratulated on having run one of the nicest sorial functions yet held in Opunake. For several trips the Rimu has been unable to call in on account of heavy seas, so favourable weather has been eagerly looked for. She was due again on Wednesday morning, and as the spas were fairly calm it was confidently expected that a landing would bo effected. To the astonishment and disappointment of all interested, however, she again went by, nr twithstanding that the harbour master signalled her to call in. As a result of the general indignation, a wire signed by several firms who had cargo aboard the vessel was sent to the secretary of the Northern S.S. Company, demanding an explanation of the action of the captain. A runaway caused some excitement last week? Mr. M. Hiekey had left his hors* and gig standing in the main j street, when something started the j horse going, and although several ef1 forts were made to stop it, considerable damage was done to the vehicle before tho animal came to a standstill.
