LAWN TENNIS.
TARANAKI V. AUCKLAND. The weather still keeps fine, and it promises to be a fine day on Saturday, when the annual interproyinGial fixture . between the Taranaki and Auckland, Associations takes place. " Volley " is sorry to see that Smith cannot manage to participate in the match, but nevertheless considers that the team will beat the Aucklanders. Whatever the Taranaki men do in the singles, their doubles combination has been rather upset. Dickie and Wallace will undoubtedly account for Auckland's first pair, but will the others be . equally successful? "Volley" thinks not. However good either Sellar and Powdrell might be as single players, neither will' cooperate with either Jennings or Nicholson. The separating of the NicholsonSmith combination cannot be helped — Smith, as before stated, is not available. But, why hasn't Jennings hispartner? The Jennings-Caplen combination is by now well known to the New Plymouth tennis public, and it is therefore unnecessary for " Volley " to point out its good points. The ladies are undoubtedly very strong, but with the inclusion of Mrs. ' Jones it would have been stronger. The committee, headed by the two, usual capable and energetic secretaries (Messrs. J. Paton and JEE. Stocker), have all the arrangements in hand, and spectators should witness an interesting day's tennis. Play will commence in the morning, and will be continued throughout the day. Five members of the visiting team arrived in New Plymouth las^ evening. They came ,via the Wanganui River. They were — Misses Gorrie, Martin and TJpton, Messrs. Upson and Le Sieur (secretary of the Auckland Associatiflrts ' J Mi ±j>
