Professor Edward* Charles Stirling was born, in South Australia on September 8, 1848, and was educated at St. Peter's College, South Australia; Trinity College, Cambridge; and St. George's Hospital, London. He was house surgeon, assistant surgeon and lecturer on Physiology at St. George's Hospital. In. 1881 the Professor returned to South, Australia and became lecturer and subsequently Professor of Physiology at the Adelaide University. In 1883-86 he was a member of the House of Assembly and on the Council of the Adelaide University. The Professor has published many interesting publications. ', ■ : Mr T. W. Rhodes, one of the unsuccessful candidates at the recent Thames bye-election, was tendered a complimentary social at Coromandel recently, and presented with a purse of sover^ eigns. Evetts has taken temporary charge of the Ratapiko School dtfring the absence of Mrs Wilspn who received a fractured arm as^he result of a trap accident on Saturday.' The members of the Taranaki Land Board left New Plymouth yesterday for Stratford, and then went on to Whangamomona , where they stay, over ! to-day. They then proceed to Tatu where a couple of days will be spent before continuing their journey to Mangaroa. From -this point the movements/of the Board have not yet been -definitely decided upon. Mr \Percy Smith and Miss Smith have left for Rotorua and Taupo on an extended holiday trip. Miss Ethel Baker, who left New Plymouth some months ago to take up missionary work in China is, her many friends will be pleased to .hear, now settled down at a place called ShiurHing. This town has a particularly healthy climate and Miss Baker if pleased with the place. From the ton© of recent letters it is gleaned that Miss Baker is well and is -enjoying herself ana her work generally. ' Mr John Allan Thomson, 8.5.C. , (N.Z.), B.A. Oxon, first New Zealand Rhodes scholar, and a son of Mr G. M. Thomson, M.P. for Dunedin North, was last evening appointed Leciiurer in Geology and Demonstrator in Biology by the Victoria College Council. Mr Thomson is at present Lecturer in Geology at St. John's College, Oxford. Mr F. P. Wilson, M.A., was appointed Lecturer in Economics. A Press wire states that he handed in his re signation as a member of the College Council last night.
