OUR CHAMBER OF Co3Dltil*CE AND THE BACK-BLOCKS. To the Editor, Sh'j — 1 qfoserve in your report of the last meeting of our Chamber of Commerce that a little more life seems to be infused among i(.j members, and hope that their recommendations axuiy bring forth good fruit in dv« time. 1 should like them to look a little neai*or home. I wish to draw their attention to the wealth that lies at 'New Plymouth's door 1 , namely, the forest of 10,000 acres (scarcely yet touchod) and mineral wealth yet undeveloped [situated 10 miles from town, and I about oigM h\ym iho hvc&kwaker. This] [ forest, if a light railway, tram, or a good metalled road were put through, would fmd employment for 150 men immediately in the timber trade. Besides this, inexhaustible stone quarries could be opened to supply all, roads and streets this side o? ?.lt. Ivg-mont. ' The Elthmn people are agitating for a railway to Opunake, but tho Xew Plytoouthites seem- content to let this railway to Opunake quietly alone. This [3 a matter that I hope to see fully (discussed by our Chamber of Commerce at their next meeting. If information is required^, I shall bo most happy to attend the meeting aud point ov<b the advantages that would accrue to 'New. Plymouth, and the breakwater from a work like this being put in hand. Some of our settlers arc trying to leave the country on account of having no roads and 710 profitable employment. — I am, etc,
