March 24th.— At a largely-attended-mooting of the revived Chamber of Conxmerce yesterday Mr MeCluggage brought forward for consideration a petition to Parliament in favour of giving Government leaseholders the' option of purchase. He spoke strong^ ly in support, his many years' experience in the back-blocks having convinced him that freehold teraure was essential 1 to successful settlement. He was followed by other speakers, including His Worship the Mayor, and /their , unanimity was wonderful, , tho motion to adopt the petition being carried without a dissentient voice. Th/ 3 v.ote is very, significant, coming as it does* from, a mooting composed /6f represent/atives of. all shades of political opinion, except the "singletaxors." Ttfost of the speakers were supporters of the Government on general questions. 'Two old residents passed away yesterday in the .same street, smd almost at the sanie hour, Mr* N. McLennan" (/at one time of' the Qhib Hotel), aim! Mrs Best (lately in business in Broadway) . Tho secretary of the National Dairy Association was in town yesterday. In company wit3i the Mayor arid Chair? eiaii of tlio School C©raniitte3, lie visited the Te'qhnicaU School building*, and expressed himself very pleased with the provision being made for instruction in the science of dairying. At the County Council meeting yesterday, a certificate was granted to M-r H. W. Climie testifying, to, Ms 12 years' good work as County Engineer. Mr Clime resigns at -the .end of the month, and a large nmnV' of applications are ,in for 4 the position. A choice is to bo made .at a special ■ meeting on the 30th. ...
