The Northern Company's New Steamer.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RAKAWA.

The Rarawa was built at the Camperclown Shipyard, Dundee, by Mcssrg Gouriay Brothers and Co., and was launched on April 30 last, Miss Elsie Hitchcock (Mss Hanson's niece) graceiully doing the honours for the occasion The Rarawa has been specially designed to meet the requirements of the company, is of the awning deck type, and constructed to the highest class in | Lloyd's Reg-is try and under their special suDvey. The vessel is also built and equipped to comply with the Board ol Trade requirements and regulations for a passenger certificate. The vossel is 210 ft long ; breadth (moulded), 31ft; depth (moulded to mam deck), 14ft, and to awning deok 21ft Bin, with a gross tonnage of 1100. The hull throughout is built ol Siemens-Martin steel, and in many details is in excess of Lloyd's rules, with a view to additional strength, to meet the special working conditions of the West Coast trade. The main deck is of steel, , sheathed with yellow pine and teak, and all exposed decks are also of teak. The vessel is rigged as a fore-and-aft schooner, having two steel masts, constructed and stayed for lifting heavy weights. The boats are carried on the shade decks, and are each fitted with De Vos' patent chocks and turninggear, by which they can be manipulated in the least possible time in case of accident. THE PASSENGER ACCOMMODATION. The first-class passenger accommodation occupies the gx^ater part of the main deck and also the 'tween decks forward of the machinery, the afterpart of the vessel being reserved for second-class passengers. Largo and commodious state-rooms are provided for both ladies and gentlemen, each equipped with the latest and most modern appliances. The ladies have an open room off the dining saloon, fitted with lavatories, etc., and tl?e main entrance at the awning deck is also arranged for their convenience, and ia handsomely furnished as a lounge room for their accommodation in the daytime. The second-class passengers are accommodated aft, the gentlemen in open berths on the main deck, and the ladies are similai'ly berthed in a deckhouse on the awning deck. THE APPOINTMENTS.

The main entrance is from the awning deck. Here a large hall has been provided, neatly panelled and pilastered in polished teak, oak, and sycamore, the roof framed and panelled and artistically picked out in gold. This apartment is lighted by a large serniapherical dome skylight, glazed with plate glass, and decorated with New Zealand views, the interior beiug fitted with very elegant brackets for the electric light. The cushions are upholstered in terra cotta frieze velvet, with curtains to match, the floor being covered with Brussels carpet and rubber mats. Descending the stairway the dining saloon is entered, which is a large apartment on the main deck, extending rigtht across the ship, and capable of seating 60 passengers at a time. This aoartment is handsomely framed and panelled in polished oak, with sideboard and piano to correspond. The roof is neatly panelled, painted white, and relieved with gold. "he dining tables are of mahogany, set up on gilded iron standards ; i evolving polished oak armchairs are provided »t<t fitted at the tables. The sofas are upholstered in moquette, and lie curtains are gold damask, the floors being covered with the company's pivlttrn runners. Adjoining the dining saloon, on the port side, is the jo»try, fitted with hot press, sideboards, and other necessary requisites. On xhe siarboard side is the ladies' room, which is very handsomely ,framed and panelled in Hungarian ash, maple, and mahogany, with mahogany dado, riofas trc upholstered with high, pile, blue fixeze vel,vet, curtain's are of gold damask, and the carjpet is an Axminster. A complete installation of electric ligot has been fitted throughout the vessel, THE ENGJ.NES. The vessel is propelled by two sets of triple expansion engines, which are supplied with steam by two singleended boilers, having a working pressure of JBolb per square inch. Cylinders are respectively 14in, 23in, and ! 37in in diameter, all having a stroke of 24in. Each boiler is 13ft by lift, fitted with three of Deighton's furnaces, each 38in in diameter. The only pumps attached to and worked by the main engines are the air and bilge pumps, the former of which is Edwards' patent, which is so constructed that it can be opened and repaired at ma without stopping the engines. The Rarawa ran her trials for speed, draught, etc., on theTay, which proved entirely successful in every respect. The speed obtained was 13 knots, which is half-a-knot in excess of contract, and the other conditions of c««itract were equally satisfactory. COOL CHAMBERS. To meet the growing demand for carnage of dairy produce, the Rarawa has a large insulated cooling chamber provided on the lower deck. The reirigcrating machinery consists of a No. 'S vertical marine type machine, on Messrs J. and E, Hall's patent carbonic anhydride system. The whole installation was completed by the makers, and on trial, proved entirely satisfactory. A small ice tank is also provided in connection with the freezer for malting and providing ice f!or the ship's use, Tho Rarawa has been built to the plans and specifications of Mr Geo. Gow, the company's superintendent, who has also supervised her construction during the period of building, and Mr Gow is deserving of every praise for the nianner in Which the Rarawa has been designed and her construction carried out. The contract was determined and placed with Messrs Gourlay Brothers and Co. by Mr Chas. Hanson, when in Britain hi October last, and; he and his Board are to be congratulated upon their enterprise and spirit. The vessel reaches port in charge of Captain J. C. Blacklock, who has with him the following officers : — Chief, M* Cumming3 ; second, Mr Rowlings ; third, Mr Robertson. Mr H. Lister has charge of the machinery, -with Mr Blackwood and Mr Macfarlane as assistants. All are to be congratulated upon the condition in which she arrives everything about the decks and below being beautifully clean and fresh. The Rarawa was floated into the Auckland dock on Tuesday for cleaning and painting, and goes round to Onehunga next week to take up her running between M-anakau auld New Plymouth.
