Accidents and Fatalities.

When the 7 o'clock tram was coming to town last night, near the North Belt, a poung woman named Mary Brown, 23 years of age, jumped ofi while the cars were in motion, and fell. The train went over both legs, inflicting frightful injuries. She was taken to the hospital, where she died shortly after midnight. She was a daughter of Peter Brown, of Akarou, and niece to Campbell Brown, of Lyltelfcon. A young girl named Alice Phipps, daughter of Sydney Phipps of Sydenham, was found dead in a bath this morning. It is supposed she had a fit. Auckland, April 5. A man named Messenger had a narrow escape at Rotorua on Thursday. He entered a manhole connected with the sew - ' age system without taking the necessary precautions, and succumbed very quickly to the sulphur fumes, which, in Rotorua^ collect in addition to ordinary sewage gases. On seeing Messenger succumb a Maori entered the mauhole, and fastened a rope roung the unconscious man's body. The fnmes almost overcame the Maori, 6ut he managed to reach the surface- be1 fore he fainttd. Messenger was then drawn up and found to be in a bad way. He was conveyed to his lodgings in great agony, and attended by Dr.-JJenny. Auckland, April 7. The nine year-old son of Alfred Hux ford injured his knee while playing see-saw on the 3rd inst., and died yesterday before a doctor arrived. Carterton, April 7. The body of Mrs Sullivan, who was lost three weeks l ago, was found yesterday in a dense clump of gone about 500 yards from the railway line in the opposite direction from where her bag was found. The body was much decomposed Gisborne, April 7. Tne bursting of a waterspout caused a sudden flood in the Waknate river, coming down in a wall five feet high, which swept away a buggy and pair driven by a settler named Young, who jumped clear and escaped, but the* horses and trap have nut been since seen*. ,
