9 THE PREMIER ON THBfSTJS* PENSIONS. (Per Press Association). AUckland, January 31.— 1n reply to a question as to how long the present stoppage of piublic works will continue, the Premier said .that under the Public Revenues Act after the 31st of March we can spend for the next three months* on the same basis as last year, so there is a prospect that w.ork will be resumed, after 31st March, should circumstances warrant such a course Gisborne, January 31. — At - a public meeting to-night a resolution was passed expressing regret at : tfie stoppage of the Gisborne— Karaka railway works, and -urging their resumption as early as possible'; It was also suggested that it might even now be better to revert * to a light line so as to give more rapid access to the back countryi and to save the valuable timber , which is an-nually being destroyed for want of means of bringing it out.
