Tho Cash Trading Company will have an adverlisainent in Monday's issue of interest to townspeople. Tho revenua of the 'Wellington-Napier-New Plymouth section oli the Government railways for the four weeks ended the 7th December, 1901, was £41,844, against £36,098 in the corresponding period of 1900. There was an increase for the 1901 period in every item except dogs, calves, and minerals. Tho excellence of the streets and footpaths in Napier is noted by every visitor to ihe town. The Borough authorities pay special attention to tho preparation of the asphalting material, and the results are most satisfactory. The tar is put into retorts in the boilers and^istilled by the ordinary process. The evaporation is carried away through cold pipes and distilled into receiving vats. Spirits and ammonia are taken away from the tar, and thus, by the distilling pro cess, all the heating and burning properties which dry and burn up the tar too much are taken away, the elastic properties remaining. The tar is thus rendered more durable. The spirits and ammonia distilled from the tar are used as disinfectants for sanitary purposes. £ The lady traveller for the Tracker Eucalyptus Company, who has,been sent by them from Australia and who is now touring New Zealand, will be in New Plymouth early in the coming week to arrange agencies with local business men to place the Tracker Brand of Eucalyptus on the market. ThL» brand is being freely advertised in all adjoining districts. The Company's attisfc", who is now busy getting up display notices on" hoardings, etc, iv Wanganui, will be here at the end of the week. This Tracker Brand is doubly distilled by the newest American procers and from a specially fine flavoured leaf of superior medicinal value' growing in the high regions of Central Australia in almost inaccessible situations, and away from ordinary civilisation. It is collected by the native blacks. Eucalyptus is now used in India as a specific for the bubonic plague, and in England for almost all the ills that flesh is heir tn, especially influenzn. In fr.cb it has more curative uses and is better than any other medicine known. On Monday night the Borough Council will consider the following recommendations from the Works Committee :■ —That the Borough Surveyor be instructed to prepare a plan showing grades, etc., of the road to the beach from Goverstreet as requested by tho Railway De partment; that the owners interested having agreed not to claim any compensation from tho Council for the alteration 1o the levels, Gover-street be lowered three feet at the Filliestreet crossing; that the suggestion, uftde by the District Engineer of Railways that the Department should pa^r the Council a sum to be agreed on, and theLlouncil provide access to the beach from Gover8 treet, be not adopted, but that the original arrangement made, viz , that the Department provide access, be adhered | to; that the application of the Railway : "Department for permissioa to grade and lower part of Molesworth-sireet be not acceded to, bat that the Department be allowed t j remove earth from Kawau-( street uuder supervision of Borough Surveyor; that the Council pay onefourth of the costs of drains at the continuation of Mole3worth street, the balance to be paid by the Railway Department. The annual returns of the work done in the Magistrate's Court for the year 1901 have been prepared by Mr A. H. Holmes, assisted by Mr McAra. The returns show that 260 males and 15 females were taken into custody,, summoned, or apprehended. The numbers were disposed of as follows: —14 males and 1 female were discharged fos&ant of pros cution or want o* evidence ; 33 males and 4 females had their cases dismissed on the merits; 13 males were committed for trial; 200 males and 10 females were summarily convicted ? 106 males and 5 females were fined j 10 n&!e« were imprisoned in lieu of fine or secu rity; 18 males and 1 female suffered peremptory impriaonient; 3 males were bound over with or without sureties; 49 males and 4 females'hadWders made against them; 14 males were convicted and * discharged with a caution. The figures also show that 62 males (including one Maori) and one female were proceeded against for drunkenness; that rrobibition orders were issued against 40 males (including 4 Maoris) and 3 females; that there were 13 by-laws pases; and 13 cases of failing to send children tp school In all the other glasses of criminal procedure the cases did not reach double figures. There were 6 cases of procuring liquor for prohibited persons, and a coincident number of cases for procuring persons to obtain liquor. Under the rogue and vagabond heading there were 4 cases. There were two cases of resisting the police. There were three cases- for maintenance of illegitimate) children, 4 for maintenance of wife and family, and 3 under the separation head- 1 ing. For theft there were 10 cases under the Criminal Code, 1893, and a similar number under the Indictable; Offences S.J., 1894. The civil statistics showed jfchat 424 plaints had been entered, 434 cases tried, £4,597 lOs'lOd w^s the amount sued for, and that £2216 10s 5d was the amount recovered., Tbe Supreme filpurt and District Court figures are not available, but the business was not heavy.
