TONGAPORUTU.

[FBOM A CORRESPONDtKT.j A MEi/riXG has been held for the purpose of appointing officers for the annual regatta which has been fixed for Wednes- ' day, March 21st, instead of the usual day the 17th (St. Patrick's Day). There wa'a a good muster of settlers, and subscriptions came in very freely considering the lists in circulation to aid the wounded in the present war. A good programme has been drawn up, com- \ prising, amongst other events, two swimming races, for which our postmaster ia in active training already. A full programme will be duly advertised in the Budokt. lam quite satisfied that this regatta will be a great success, as tha management is in the right hands. The roads here aye in first-class order, and I notice that tlie public arc taking advantage of this, as several vehicles and cyclists have been through lately. I\ regret to add that' one of our road Inspectors was delayed owing to his tyre collapsing, but I hope he has reached home ere this. ■ The Nora Bradshaw (Capt. Dugdale) is again in the- river as another full cargo is awaiting her. I anticipate that the skipper will shortly have to increase lief, tonnage as trade is unusually brisk. . The mam road formation is practically finished, and tho co-operative men are - now busy with the by-roads, which wilt" open up a lot of new country that should shortly be taken up, and also provide access to tho few vacant sections here. These, I hope, will be put oirthd market forthwith, as there are a number 1 of enquiries for them. I notice that feed is plentiful, and tha stock are looking exceptionally well considering the present dry season, which does not affect us. Things are prosperous all round. Wa have had several births lisre recently and judging by the numerous couples I sea on Sunday we anticipate marriage festivities and wedding cake in the near; future.
