PRAISE FOR NEW ZEALANDERS.
Bishop Cowio received a letter the other day from tho ltov. A. T. Wingm.iu, j Senior Cl.aplain of tho colonial forces on active service in South Africa, in tho com so of which the writer says :—: — " A smart skirmish with the Boors took place whilst I Avas in camp, and I could follow the enomy's movements with a field glass. As a Cape Colonist I was naturally most interested in my brother colonists from Australia and New Zealand. The New Zealand Rifles struck mo as being smarter and better horsed than even the famous New South "Wales Lancers. I went down their lines and was struck with the cheery workmanlike look of the men and the admirable and serviceable character of tho horses. Their horsos were every bit as good as those of the crack cavalry regiments in camp with them. After tho morning's skirmish Creneral Frenclrroturnefl to his headquarters by train, and I travelled in tho s.uno carriage with him. The General said that tho Now Ze danders were the best men ho had for tho work in hand. Ho was deeply impressed by thuir discipline and smartness in doing mounted int'.nitry work. They were üble to fight the Boers in their own way, and showed admirable coolness and steadiness under firo. General French won tho battle of Elands Laagtc, which is so far tho most successful action in tho war. He thoroughly understands the Boer methods of warfare, and praise such as he gave the New #Qafoodip in worth buying indeed, 1 '
