Tuesday, August 22.— The Hon. tho Speaker took the chair at 2 30.
The second reading of the Young Persons Protection Bill was moved by tbe Minister for Education. He explained th it the measure was generally similar to '.he Bill of previous years, and contended that there was ample necessity for its pas<age into law. It would bring parents to a proper senss of their responsibilities. The Hon. Mr McLean denied that there was sufficient depravity among the young people to justify tha introduction of such' a Bill, it it were adopted, libsrty would be seriously infringed.
The Hon. Mr Jones contended that etils did exist which would never be cured till the State took a more lively interest in the s. flairs of the young.
The Hon. Mr Bonar could not see any necessity for the Bill, which sought to confer mo3t arbitary powers on officials.
Tho Hon. Mr Rigg suggested the relegation of the measure to a Select Committee, with power to call evidence on ibe subject.
The Bill was opposed by the Hons. Shrimski and Ormond, and supported by ihe Hons. Twomey and Montgomery ; the second reading baing agreed to by 20 votes to 6,
