Several members of the baspball team have returned. They confirm the failure of the tour. They lost money steadily as they went from San Francisco eastward. They made & little money in Boston and Chicago, but lost heavily through their forced stay of a month in New York, and had barely sufficient to pay their passages to England.
Sydney, September 15.
The diver May leaves by the Talune to-day. He is confident he will be able to recover thu Tasmania's mails, as well as tho jewellery.
The Sydney Presbytery examined Mr Rut'edge, the Wesleyan minister who made charges of drunkenness against a Presbyterian minister to the Rev. L. M. Isitt. The inquiry was conducted with closed doors. Mr- Rutledge declined to make a statement in support of his allegations, and also declined to divulge the name or say whether the clergyman was within tile jurisdiction of the Presbytery or not. The Presbytery regretted that in consequence of Mr Rutledge's reticence it was unable to pursuo the inquiry.
Hobart, September 15. The small steamer Kelpie, which left Melbourne on September 10th, foundered noxt day when 50 miles off Melbourne Heads. The crew, consisting of captain, engineer, and one seaman, took to a thirteen feet dingy, and successfully crossed the straits, landing at Penguin yesterday. They had no water and only two # small tins of meat. Brisbane, September 14. I A man named Werrill has surrendered himself to the police, stating tkat he had murdered his wife. The selfaccused man conducted the constables to a house where the woman was found with a deep stab behind the ear. She died in a couple of hours. Werrill arrived in Brisbane from Sydney yesterday and discovered that his nife had been misbehaving herself.
