A GRATEFUL COUNTRY'S TRIBUTE TO THE 40th REGT.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — In a small allotment situated near the Waitara School, covered by furze and scrub, and surrounded by a dilapidated and broken down fence with a gate upon which there is no faster— a resort of tho stray cows of the district— l find a stono with the following inscription :—: —
"In lovintr memory of Charles Francis Brooke, 40th Regiment, aide de camp to Major-General Sir Thomas Pratt ; also of the men and officers of the 40fch Regfc. who fell bravely performing their duty during the war of 1860-61, some of whom lie interred in this spot ; also of Lieut. Denis Jackson, 40th Regt , who fell in action in front of Huirangi, 23rd Jan., 1861." In loving memory ! Is it not a fact that a considerable time ago tha Government supplied tho necessary funds to keep this i place in reverent order ? " God's acre ! Yes, that blessed name imparts Comfort to those who in the grave have sown The seed that they had garnered in their hearts Their bread of life — alas no more their own ! " A grateful country's tribute ! and a disgrace to every individual in the district, but especially to the local bodies — I am, &c, Ben. A. Hignett. Waitara, 11th Septembor.
