♦ The judgment summons. Mrs Clegg v. Mary Ruakere, was continued in the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday afternoon. After hearing the evidence His Worship would not make an order. Mr Hughes appeared for the judgment creditor. The weekly meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society was held on Tuesday evening, in the Liardet-street Schoolroom. , There was a good attendance, Mr E. Vealo - (President) in the chair. Mr C. .F., Richmond gave a capital es3ay on Charles Dickens, and during the evening readings were contributed by Mr McDiarmid from " David Copperfield", and Mr Blyth from "Nicholas Nickelby," Mr Blyth's contribution being exceptionally wellrendered. Mr R. Fair, the petroleum expert, who leaves for Sydney on Saturday, will take with him five barrels of petroleum as samples. He expeots to be away about two months, but in the meantime, it is understood, that arrangements will be made for sinking another bore on Mr Mace'B property near the Omata tollgate. Frank Smith, the escaped prisoner, is still at large. He has been seen at the Henui on several occasions. On Monday the Opunake coach was delayed at the Kaihihi ford, on account of a heavy fresh in the river. Mr Prenter, the driver, was ablo to cross on Tuesday, proceed to Opunake, and return to town the same night. Captain Edwin telegraphed at 1.30 p.m. to-day : "Indications strong north to west and south west winds after 16 hours from now. Glass fall." Mr B. Wealo lm completed arrangements to open a refreshment stall at the rwUway station, commencing on Friday n sxt. This should prove a great bcoh to tr.wellera by steamers and railway, and it is to be hoped that Mr Weale s enterprise will meet with hoarfcy support. Tlio man Henry Thompson, who ap- j pear ed in the Police Court this (Wednesday) morning on an alleged charge of solicit ing and receiving alma under false | prott nces, has one leg, and while standing fn tho dock supported _ himself on crut< 'i'ea. Ho is about thirty-five years of age, wears a short-clipped sandy beard, and is. evidently, as stated in Court, a native of Norway. Ho was dressed in a stylish, light tweed suit, and wore spectacles. When ho waß remanded ho began a most dismal wailing, which he kept up at intervals till he went away on crutches with ('onstablo McAnerin to the gaol.
