MIDHIRST.

[mom our own correspondent.] Ox the evening of Net? Year's Day a great entertainment was giveli ifl tile Town Hail by Mr Collins, tfae late, And Mr Coilciimanj tile present host of tie Egmont Hdtel. It was open to all who chose to attend. Ample 1 provision was made in the line of solids and liquids,- and I understand full justice was done to We good things. Mr James Rodgers presided, and in his usual efficient manner kept the attention of the audienco fully occupied with toasts, songs, speeches, &c. Mr Gollius and his amiable family have flow retired Into private life, which I sincerely hope they will enjoy. The chiirches are not be'hirid irt the variotis fcffms tff re-taion suitable to 1 the' I season. In the Wesleycm Church, now greatly enlarged, the anniversary meeting was recently held, when songs atid spe'efthes suitable to the occasion enlivened ana interested a large audience. Similarly in the Primitive Methodist Church was held j a service of song, -which -w?s -well attended. These two bodies represent chiefly the religious organisations which assemble in Midhirst, and both are very active in their several spheres. Many private parties were also given to celebrate the close of 1894 and the beginning of 1896. In these friends and relations Increased their Intimacy and renewed their friendships! and though such parties are not open to the Press, yet I doubt not in the least b;ut that their influence for good is immense ill cementing kindly feelings, which, in the wear and tear of the ensuing twelve months, will have great though silent influence.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the School CGrrimitteß Wits held on January 14th. Present —Messrs KodgefS (Chairman) Clark, Jones, Fincham, Serjeant and Vincent. The following resolutions were passed :—": —" That Mrs Clark receive ten shillings extra for labor in connection with dut offices, to bo paid at the end of her term." •' That Mr Serjeant be Treasurer to the Committee: "That nominations of candidates for seats oil the Education Board be deferred for a fortnight as it is not yet known who are likely to be candidates." " That a hearty vote of thanks be given to all those who assisted at the late school concert, viz., Mr Joseph Mackay as chairman, Miss Maekay as pianiste, Mrs Serjeant, Misses Morton, Mckay, Hirst, Worm, Pedel'sen, and Scott, and Messrs Rapley, Pickard, L-eland, Mackay, F. Pedersen, R. Peden en, and Derby ; also to Mr Serjeant for the use of his piano, and the directors of the hall Company for the use of the Hall. The total proceeds of concert and subscription lists amounted to £14, and after paying all oxponses the committee have about £6 to place to the el'edit of the school prize tund. I think in liberality in school matters few places of its size can show a better record than Midhirst. In perusing the report of the School Concert on 18th December, I find that I inadvertently omitted to mention the name of Miss Hirst. I take this opportunity to rectify the omission. Miss Hirst sang in a most pleasing manner. Her selection was, I think, entitled " The Gates of the West." Should I have omitted any other lady or gentleman who kindly lent assistance on the occasion I beg to apologise.
