WINTER CAMPAIGN DECIDED ON CHILI REFUSES TO SELL HER WAR FLEET. Both sides keep up a continuous fire across the Jinjin River. • It is officially denied that the Generals have been negotiating for an armistice. A two days' engagement took place at Karching. the result being indecisive. The floods prevent the Chinese from crossing the Norpin in face of Japanese entrenched on the other side. Washington, September 13. — The New York Herald says that Chili has refused to sell her warships to China. The Japanese Legation at Washington confirms the loss of the Hiyei. FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR T. LARWILL HUMPHRIES. The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Larwill Humphries, who died in Napier after a long and lingering illness, took place at 10 o'clock this (Friday) morning, the deceased young gentleman being iiterred in the family ground in the Te Henui Cemetery. The body was brought here from Napier on Thursday, accompanied by Mr Thomas Humphries, the deceased's father, who is Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands in the Hawke's Bay district, and several members of the family. The fioneral procession left the mortuary chapel in the cemetery, the remains being followed to the grave by the relatives and many friends, by whom tha deceased was esteemed and respected. Several beautiful wreaths covered the coffin. Yen. Archdeacon Govett officiated at the grave side.
