BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present : The Mayor, Messrs Brash, Ward, Walton, Avery, Teed, Furlong, Dockrill and Dingle. Correspondence. — A telegram from the Government intimated that as no sum had been put on the appropriations to pay the expenses of the licensing Election, the Council would have to pay its share. His Worship said the Borough's share would be £50. — A. Davidson wrote, asking the Council to use its influence with the Railway Commissioners to prevent the siding at Eliot-street being removed, as it was the intention of the Commissioners to do so. After some discussion, Mr Furlong proposed,, and Mr Walton seconded that ' the Mayor and Messrs Dockrill and Teed be appointed a deputation to wait on the Railway Commissioners on Friday. — William Moon wrote, calling the Council's attention to the fact that a pool of stagnant water lying at the back of his laud was dangerous from a health standpoint. Referred to the Public Works Committee. Waterworks. — The Engiueer reported that he had effected some necessary repairs to the waterworks. Sanitary. — The Sanitary Inspector reported that the sanitary condition of the town is good. ' In Committee. — The Council went into Committee on the Public Works Committee's report. It was discussed at some length, and eventually passed. Public Works Committee's Report. — A meeting was held on February 19th. Present: The Mayor (in the chair), Messrs Dockrill and Dingle. The Committee recommended that a letter be sent to the Railway Commissioners stating that the Council proposed to fill up the western sido of the bridge in Liardet-streot with earth, and on the opposite side with earth also a's far as necessary for the embankment. That James Conway receive eight shillings per day from the time that Mr Maher took his discharge. That in future single rfien be only paid for three yards broken metal weekly, married men four yards, and married men with large families five yards. That the letter of Mr Bruce, re Barrett-street, be referred to Mr Dingle to report on. Present : The Mayor, Messrs Dockrill, Dingle and Furlong. The plans of Mr W. Bayly's new building ; also that of Mr Evett's front shop, were shown and approved of. — It was resolved : That an inch pipe be laid from the main in Liardet-street to section No. 000 ; and that Mr West be granted a length of pipe from the main in St. Aubyn-street on condition he found the remainder of the piping required. That the old pipe taken from the top of Brougham-stroet be laid down in Lemonstreet, from the main in Cameron-street to sec lftll'.l, and should any more be required the person requiring the water to pay for it. That 20 yards of gravel be taken out of the pit for the Central School Committee, who will pay for it. — That the borough surveyor be requested to report on that portion of Egmont-street between Devon and Kingstreets, lately finished by Messrs Bayly and Carrington, if it is in good order and finished accoi'ding to the conditions of the Council. — That the services of Thos. Kyle be dispensed with, and another man, Geo. Waters, bo taken on temporarily in his place. On 12th March the Committee again met. The plans of the building in Queen-street for W. Jury were adopted. Mr W. J. Russell's tondcr»of Is BAd per yard for carting stone and gravel was accepted. H. Hooker's tender of Is 6, per foot for straight kerbing and Is 7-fd per foot for corners, and In 5d por foot for new paving and 10£ d for old, was accepted. The opening Up of Hob-son-street, from Lemon-street to the railway, was deferred until the Committee had tune to visit the street. Mr Alex. Davidson's letter wa» referred to the Council That Mr W. W. Smith be taken on as foreman of works on probation for one month, and if approved of engaged permanently. In accordance with the application of Messrs W. Bayly and F. A. Carrington the Borough Surveyor be requested to give a certificate that Egmont-street, from King to Devonstreet, is finished agreeably to the resolutions laid down by the Council, and His Worship the Mayor take necessary steps for taking the roiid over. Health Committee. — This committee met on 12th March. The tender of Messrs Christiansen and Beale for scavengering the town was accepted. Accounts were passed for payment, after which the Council rose.
