POLICE COURT.
Monday, March 12. — Before Major Parris, J.P., C. Rennell, Esq., J.P., J. Hughes, Esq., J.P. Throwing Stonks. — Three boy's Peter Ross, John Howell, and Harry Jury were charged with throwing stones on a house on South Road. Mr Samuel appeared for Jury ; the others were undefended. Murray Hooker gave evidence to the effect that he saw Howell and Ross throwing stones, but did not see Jury. Peter Ross was called and said he had made a mistake in saying Jury had thrown stones. Jury was dismissed, but Ross and Howell were fined 10s each, and expenses 9s each. The Bench cautioned the boys to be careful in future, as stringent measures would be taken against them. Attempt to Rescue. — Samuel Howell was charged with attempting to rescue a cow from the Mangorei Pound on the sth March. Charles Edward Gledhill, farmer, residing on Avenue Road — on sth March fouud a cow on the Road, and was taking it to tho pound, when Samuel Howell obstructed. James Muller, stonemason, Mangorei, gave evidence to the effect that he saw the accused waving his hands trying to stop it. — William Allen saw Gledhill taking the cow to the pound, and he asked witness to help him. Whenjhey got to the pound, Samuel Howell was trying to keep it from getting in. On Howell being told that ho was running a risk of a heavy penalty he (Howell) helped to get the cow in. — Samuel Howell made a statement that there was a quarrell between Mr Petrio, his employer, and Mr Gledhill. Gledhill had threatened to impound all Potrie's cattle he found on the road. When he first saw Gledhill with the cow it was on an unfenccd portion of Petrie's liui'd. — The case was dismissed.
