STIPENDARY MAGISTRATES COURT.
MoxuAY,March 12. — Before Major Pan-is, J.P., C. Rennell, Esq., J.P., and J. Hughes, Esq., J.P. Failing to send in Income Tax Returns. — Twentyman Wilson, hotelkeeper, Stratford, was charged with failing tosend in returns, as required by the Income Tax Assessment Act. — Mr Kerr appeared for the Income Tax Commissioner. — On April Ist, 1892, an advertisement appeared in the Taranaki Herald and News drawing the attention of the public to the fact that returns must 1 be in before April 18th, 1892. This the defendant had omitted to do, although he had been written specially to" by the Commissioner. The case was called as a warning to others, and that though in the present case the Commissioner would only ask for the lowest penalty and treble the amount of the tax, they wished it to be distinctly understood that they would press for higher penalties in the future. — Mr David Sheriff Millar, acting Chief Postmaster at New Plymouth, read the letter specially sent to Mr Wilson. — The defendant did not appear. — Fined £5, and costs £2 9s.
