Melbourne, March 11. Returns have been prepared which lead to the belief that Sydney is supplanting Melbourne in the neighboring markets, the reasons advanced being the greater facilities for shipping and cheapness of fuel. The Premier is enquiring into the matter ; meanwhile steps are being taken to reduce port charges. Melbourne, March 12. Messrs Farran & Coy., a firm of merchants, trading in Melbourne, Sydney, and London, have failed. The liabilities amount to £98,000, and tho assets are set down at £18,000. ffhe largest creditor is the Commercial Bank, to which institution the firm is indebted to the extent of £78,000. The bankrupts state they sought protection of the Bankruptcy Court because the Federal Bank in Sydney was endeavoring to obtain the preferential order of their asseis. The Government has decided to send exhibits to the Royal Agricultural Show in London without any loss to the exhibitors. The bank rate of discount has been reduced half per cent. Sydney, March 12. Steel, tho defaulting accountant of the Hobart Coffee Palace Company, was *• arrested here to-day. Hobart, March 12. The Rev. Rogers and his congregation refused to recognise the Congregai tional Union, and the three men wno entered the church were employed by i the Union to take possession. The * quarrel will now come before the Supreme Court.
