The Taranaki Herald.

PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 1894. The Liardet Street bridge is now approaching completion, the decking being laid, so that the contractors for the earth work were able on Monday to make a fresh start with the work of making up the approaches, and cutting through the hill by Mr Frethey's. In referring to the Normanby Horticultural Society's Show last week, we said "that Mr Walter Ryley was the only prizetaker for fruit sent from this end of the district." We should have said " Mrs Ryley," as Mr Walter Ryley only forwarded the fruit in Mrs Uyley's name, that lady being absent from the district at that time. A public meeting was held on Monday evening in the Public Hall, Fitzroy. Mr J. Bellringer occupied the chair. Addresses were given on the teetotal question by the Revs. Drew and Gray and Mr Runciman, who pointed out the responsibilities which the licensing elections threw upon the people. We have more than once advocated the establishment of a telephone exchange, and are glad therefore to notice that his Worship the Mayor, at the Borough Council fin Monday night intimated that he had been in communi cation with the postal authorities on the question, and Was expecting a favorable reply, now that the conference was over.
