The Taranaki Herald.

PUBLISHED DAILY. SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 1894. Captain Edwin wired at 12.28 p.m. today : — '' Indications of strong north to west and south-west winds, and glass falling." No less than thirty-two applications have been received for the foremanship of the Borough Works at 8s a day. A proposal is on foot to form an omnibus company to run a 'bus between town and Fitzroy. An energetic canvas is being made by Messrs A. Drake D. Shuttleworth, E. L. Nathan, and other gentlemen, with gratifying results. As will be seen by advertisement elsewhere, the Taranaki Public will have an opportunity of hearing Capt. Fred. Thomas, the marvelous siffleur ventriloquist. As a humorist, he ranks with Corney Grain, Frank Lincoln &c. He irill be supported by Edison's latest Phonograph, that [created such a favourable impression last Thursday.- The dates of the entertainment are Thursday and Friday next, the 15th and 16th, and there should be two good houses as the prices are popular, viz., 2s. and Is. Seats may be booked at Gilmour s. Mr Mark Hopson, the Manager of the Moa Fanner's Union, has says the Inglewood Record, resigned his position, in consequence of his desire to devote more time to his farm on the Bristol-road. During Mr Hopson's regime the business of the Union has increased by leaps and bounds, and vt now ono of the largest institutions in Tamnaki. No small share of this success is due to Mr Hopson's sound business tact and popularity with the trading public. The directors express deep regret at Mr Hopson's resignation, and it will take some selecting to place a more capable gentleman in his position. Applications are called elsewhere for the appointment. Capt. Crossley, lately in command of the Salvation Army at Napier, has been appointed to the local command. He is expected to arrive next week. Capt. Ward, who has been in command here, had been appointed to Ashurst. Messrs Perry & Percival, of Inglewood, report tho sale of Mr E. W. Tollett's farm on the Junction Road east, to Mr W. Harrison, of Waitotara, at a satisfactory figure. The Moa Farmers' Union of Inglewood have received a report on their second shipment of butter to London, exactly three and a-half months after the shipment was sent. The report is as follows: — Package, suitable ; condition, good ; quality, good; color, correct ; saltness, correct. The whole sold at 108s per cwt. We are pleased to learn that Miss Beatrice Richmond, daughter of the late Mr Henry R. Richmond, has passed her B.A. degree. We have to congratulate the young lady on her so successfully achieving such a coveted honor. Great dissatisfaction is expressed by shootists who attended the recent meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association with the ammunition supplied. It is hinted that over 170 rounds of English Government ammunition had been usedknowingly or unknowingly, by some of the competitors. On ono occasion New South Wales ammunition was served out, and it was found much superior to tho New Zealand ammunition. It is mani fesfcly unfair to bo changing the quality of ammunition, and tho Association should in future nee that only one kind is used. The fault found with Whitney's cartridges is that tho bullets are too small, and consequently anything like accuracy of aim is impossible. Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewon havo purchased the stock in trade and goodwill of the business of Win. McArthur & Co., in New Zealand. This is stated to bo the largest cash purchase of soft goods yet made in the colony, involving tho purchase of a stock of from £80,001) to £90,000.
